RIVRT recently welcomed a group of enthusiastic secondary school mentees to the Integrated Product Design (IPD) Laboratory at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on 22 Jul, 2024. The visit provided the mentees with a unique opportunity to explore and experience the latest advancements in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Metaverse.

The visit was part of an ongoing mentorship program aimed at inspiring young students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The mentees, eager to learn about the practical applications of these emerging technologies, were guided through a series of interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities.

One of the key highlights of the visit was the VR setup, where mentees donned VR headsets and were transported into immersive digital environments. They engaged in various simulations, allowing them to understand how VR can be used for training, education, and product design.

The students also explored AR and MR technologies, which blend digital information with the real world, providing a rich, interactive experience. They were particularly fascinated by the potential of these technologies in fields such as architecture, engineering, and medical training.

AI and the Metaverse were also major points of interest during the visit. Visit from Garze Sichuan Bureau – Exploring Advanced Immersive Technologies

RIVRT was honored to welcome a delegation from the Garze Sichuan Bureau for a comprehensive tour of our cutting-edge laboratories at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The visit, aimed at fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge, provided the delegation with an in-depth look at the innovative research and technologies being developed within the Faculty of Engineering.

The delegation was introduced to various state-of-the-art facilities, where they observed firsthand the application of advanced technologies such as virtual reality (VR), simulation systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) in engineering and industrial contexts.

One of the highlights of the visit was the demonstration of the immersive driving simulator, a sophisticated tool used for research in transportation safety and driver behavior analysis. The delegation members had the opportunity to experience the simulator themselves, gaining insights into how VR can be utilized to create realistic training environments and improve safety protocols.

The visit also included a detailed presentation on the current research projects underway at RIVRT, focusing on the integration of virtual manufacturing and AI in industry 4.0 applications. RIVRT is delighted to report the success of a recent visit by a group of enthusiastic secondary school students to the Faculty of Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The visit was part of a two-day (17-18 Jul, 2024) “University Experience Programme” titled “From Physics and ICT to Engineering,” aimed at inspiring young minds and providing them with hands-on exposure to the world of engineering.

The event saw the participation of over 100 students from various secondary schools. The visit was meticulously organized to offer the students a glimpse into the cutting-edge research and educational opportunities available at PolyU’s Faculty of Engineering. Students engaged in various interactive activities, including demonstrations of virtual reality (VR) and 3D modeling technologies, which are at the forefront of RIVRT’s research.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore the CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) system, an immersive VR environment that allows users to interact with 3D simulations. This experience provided them with a deeper understanding of how VR can be used in engineering and industrial applications. The students also participated in a hands-on session where they learned the basics of 3D modeling and virtual simulations, sparking their interest in the potential of these technologies.

The faculty members, along with RIVRT researchers, guided the students through various labs and facilities, explaining the real-world applications of engineering principles. The sessions were designed to be both informative and engaging, encouraging students to ask questions and explore their interests in engineering and technology.

Lab Visit for Wuhan University of Technology

The Digital Factory Laboratory hosted a visit from students of Wuhan University of Technology on 11th July, 2024. This visit was organized to provide hands-on experience and insight into the various aspects of integrated product design, latest technologies in VR/AR, and AI.

The visit featured a range of engaging presentations and interactive sessions designed to showcase the latest advances in virtual reality technology and explore the potential applications of the Metaverse in various fields.

The Integrated Product Design (IPD) Laboratory hosted a visit from students of Tuen Mun Catholic Secondary School. This visit was organized to provide hands-on experience and insight into the various aspects of integrated product design.

Dr. Gavin Chau, a distinguished professor from the Faculty of Business at The City University of Macau, led his students on an exhilarating and educational journey to the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on 16th November, 2023. This excursion offered them a unique opportunity to delve into the realm of advanced engineering and technology, making it not only enjoyable but also highly enlightening.

The visit was led by Ir. Dr. Tang and his dedicated team, who took the students on a tour around various key labs under ISE’s aegis. These included the Digital Factory, Integrated Product Design Lab, and the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology. They also visited the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence in Design (AiDLab) located in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) in the afternoon.

The day kicked off with a visit to the Digital Factory, where the students delved into immersive CAVE and VR research applications. This eye-opening encounter offered them the opportunity to understand how virtual reality technologies are reshaping modern manufacturing processes. Next on the agenda was the Integrated Product Design Lab. Here, the students had the opportunity to interact with the Metaversity project, gaining a unique insight into metaverse applications and their potential to transform traditional product design spaces. Following this, the students were introduced to the world of ultra-precision at the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology. They were exposed to the ongoing research in ultra-precision machining technologies and precision surface metrology, as well as the fabrication and measurement of advanced optics and critical precision components.

In the afternoon, the students continued their exploration at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP), visiting the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design (AiDLab). The AiDLab is the first research platform of its kind, focusing on merging artificial intelligence with design. It was established through a collaborative effort by PolyU and the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the UK, and is funded by the HKSAR Government under the InnoHK Research Clusters.Located at the Hong Kong Science Park, AiDLab is pioneering a new creative AI cluster in design and is internationally recognized for its interdisciplinary research that drives innovation and sustainability, impacting both industry and society.

The students concluded their day expressing gratitude for the insightful visit, returning to Macau with expanded knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the advancements in engineering and technology. The visit to PolyU’s ISE department and the HKSTP was not only a joyful experience but also a significant step in their academic journey.
